Billy Joel reports recovery after brain surgery for hydrocephalus
The 77-year-old singer said he is recovering well after surgery to treat normal pressure hydrocephalus, though he still experiences balance and hearing issues.
Billy Joel told fans on his SiriusXM channel that he is recovering after undergoing brain surgery earlier this month to treat normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition diagnosed in 2025 that causes cerebrospinal fluid to build up in the brain. He said his balance remains impaired and he has experienced some hearing loss, which he attributed partly to age and his long career in loud music venues. > "I know people are worried about me because they read that I have a brain disorder, which sounds a lot worse than it actually is. I'm OK," Joel said during the call-in. He added that he hopes listeners will not be concerned about his health.
The singer, 77, first disclosed the diagnosis in May 2025 and cancelled several upcoming concerts while doctors advised him to refrain from performing. He later appeared on stage with a cover band in January, performing two songs for a small audience that included his family. A statement posted to his official social media account earlier this year explained that the condition had been aggravated by recent performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance, and that he was following a regimen of physical therapy under medical supervision.
