Phillies rally past Braves in 10th to force Game 3 of NL Wild Card Series

Summary

Alec Bohm’s 10th-inning home run gave Philadelphia a 4-3 win over Atlanta, tying the series and setting up a decisive third game.

Alec Bohm hit a two-out, 357-foot opposite-field home run in the 10th inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves, evening the National League Wild Card Series at one game each. The win followed a seventh-inning rally in which Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper hit back-to-back homers to erase a 3-1 deficit.

Phillies starter Andrew Painter, making his first postseason start, threw three scoreless innings in relief, preserving the lead and striking out Dominic Smith after a successful electronic strike-zone challenge. Painter’s performance marked the longest scoreless outing by a Phillies rookie in a postseason game.

Harper, who mishandled a fly ball earlier in the seventh that had allowed the Braves to take the lead, said, "Probably should have been caught, obviously. But how quickly can I turn the page and just get past that moment, knowing that I'm still coming up to the plate to hit. And knowing that in the postseason, it doesn't matter what you did the at-bat before, the inning before. It's what you do in that moment."

Braves manager Walt Weiss noted the late home runs, saying, "Some big home runs late by some really good hitters. That's what got us."

The win sets up a Thursday Game 3, where the Phillies will attempt to continue their postseason success against Atlanta, having previously eliminated the Braves in the 1993 NL Championship Series and the 2022 and 2023 NL Division Series.
