FlyDubai Flight Diverts to Saudi Arabia After Cockpit Fight Raises Hijacking Concerns
A FlyDubai Boeing 737 Max 8 en route from Dubai to Israel made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after a reported altercation between its pilots, prompting Israeli warplanes to scramble.
A FlyDubai flight traveling from Dubai to Israel was forced to land at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after the crew transmitted an emergency alert shortly after takeoff. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft lost more than 17,000 feet within two minutes, prompting concerns of a possible hijacking and leading Israel to scramble fighter jets.
Israeli media cited security officials who said a dispute erupted between the two pilots, with one allegedly attempting to take control of the aircraft. Passengers and other crew members reportedly intervened, and a female passenger described seeing a pilot with blood on his clothing. Videos posted online showed two men on the floor with blood stains.
A regional official briefed to the Associated Press confirmed a cockpit fight but did not specify its cause. Israeli authorities later stated the situation was under control and efforts were underway to repatriate the passengers. A recovery flight was dispatched to Tabuk to transport the travelers back.
FlyDubai, a low-cost subsidiary of Emirates, said the incident was isolated. The airline has not commented on the identities of those involved. The incident occurs amid heightened security alerts issued by Israeli officials in recent weeks.
