Ohio Jury Convicts Former 'American Idol' Contestant Caleb Flynn of Wife's Murder

Summary

A Dayton, Ohio jury found former contestant and pastor Caleb Flynn guilty on all charges related to the 2022 killing of his wife, Ashley Flynn, with sentencing set for October 5.

A Dayton, Ohio jury returned guilty verdicts on all counts against former "American Idol" contestant and pastor Caleb Flynn for the 2022 murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn, after three hours of deliberation. Flynn faced charges of aggravated murder, murder, felony murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 5, and he faces life imprisonment without parole.

Prosecutors argued that Flynn killed Ashley and staged the scene as a burglary to pursue a new life with a mistress, presenting testimony that he expressed hatred toward his wife and discussed the killing with the alleged mistress, Alleigha Botner. They also highlighted the absence of forced-entry evidence and extensive text messages between Flynn and Botner.

Flynn’s defense maintained that the prosecution offered only evidence of an affair and no proof beyond a reasonable doubt of murder, asserting that the communications indicated intent to divorce rather than to kill.

The case drew remarks from the pastor of Christian Life Center, where the couple had attended, who described Ashley as a devoted wife and mother and urged the congregation to avoid speculation.

Flynn’s sentencing is pending.
