Defense Secretary to propose 20% reduction in senior military officers

Resumen

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is expected to recommend cutting the number of active-duty generals and admirals by about one-fifth, citing a need to streamline leadership and improve efficiency.

The Pentagon plans to announce a proposal to reduce the total count of active-duty generals and admirals by roughly 20% during a speech to officers at Marine Corps Base Quantico. The move follows a previous directive in May 2025 that called for a minimum 10% cut among flag officers and a 20% reduction for National Guard generals. At present, 851 senior officers serve across the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force, just below the statutory cap of 857.

Secretary Hegseth has argued that trimming excess senior positions will “drive innovation and operational excellence” and remove bureaucratic layers that impede effectiveness. The proposal comes amid ongoing debate about the optimal size of the military’s top leadership, with some analysts warning that too many senior officers can slow decision-making, while others stress the need for experienced leaders to manage coalition operations and rapid technological change.

"We need strong leaders. These folks have decades of experience, some of the best leadership our military has ever had. He's getting rid of them," Democratic Senator Mark Kelly said, expressing concern over the planned cuts.

The announcement follows a series of personnel changes since Hegseth took office, including the departure of several high-ranking officers and civilian defense officials.
