OpenAI in talks to raise $30 billion ahead of delayed IPO

Summary

OpenAI is negotiating a new funding round of at least $30 billion at a valuation near $1.4 trillion, postponing its planned public listing to 2027.

OpenAI is negotiating with investors to secure a minimum of $30 billion in a pre-IPO financing round that would value the company at roughly $1.4 trillion, Bloomberg reported. The capital raise is intended to bridge the gap to an initial public offering that the company now expects to occur in 2027, after CEO Sam Altman ruled out a 2026 listing to focus on AI safety.

The AI firm’s run-rate revenue reportedly rose 70 % since July, reaching $40 billion in August, after a strategic shift toward areas such as coding. OpenAI’s prior private round in March raised $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation and was originally described as the final private raise before an IPO.

Altman told Fortune that he considers a “10 % chance of killing everybody by the end of the decade” unacceptable, reflecting the company’s heightened emphasis on safety concerns.

OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment.
