Apple's Foldable iPhone Duo Faces Production Yield Challenges Ahead of October Release

Resumen

Apple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, is encountering low assembly yields and component shortages that could limit early production ahead of its scheduled October launch.

Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, is experiencing production difficulties that may restrict the number of units available at launch. A source close to Foxconn's supply chain told China's Jiemian News that final-assembly yields were just above 60% on September 17 and that reaching a stable yield could take six months to a year under Apple's quality standards.

The source said Foxconn is repeatedly adjusting equipment, assembly processes and production settings while scaling up the Duo, and that component suppliers are awaiting possible changes to Apple's quality requirements. Samsung Display's foldable OLED panels and hinge components have also suffered low yields, delayed deliveries and design revisions, further compressing the time Foxconn has to fine-tune its line.

Apple reportedly tested liquid-metal materials for some hinge parts before deciding against mass use; the hinge is said to contain more than 100 components and a 3D-printed cover. A supply-chain source indicated Apple aims to stock six to eight million Duo units globally by 2026, compared with typical shipments of 20-30 million units for a standard iPhone Pro model. Another retail source noted Apple's sales guidance exceeds five million units.

According to MyDrivers, a contract manufacturer asked Apple to choose between higher yields and greater output, warning that pushing the line harder could increase production but also raise defect rates and scrap costs.

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, with pre-orders set to begin on October 16 and shipments expected to start on October 23. The device is priced from $1,999 in the United States.
