ESPN analysts criticize USC coach Lincoln Riley after loss to Oregon
Following USC's 41-27 defeat by Oregon, ESPN commentators Paul Finebaum and Stephen A. Smith condemned head coach Lincoln Riley's handling of a dangerous hit and the subsequent disciplinary response.
USC lost to Oregon 41-27 on Saturday, a result that prompted sharp criticism of head coach Lincoln Riley from ESPN analysts. The criticism focused on Riley's game management and his delayed suspension of linebacker Desman Stephens, who delivered a hit that knocked Oregon quarterback Dante Moore out of the contest and was later seen celebrating the play.
"It’s an utter disgrace. What we saw here was a tale of an elite coach and a complete fraud as a coach. He has the same record at this point in his tenure as Clay Helton, who got fired," Paul Finebaum said on ESPN First Take. He added that dismissing Riley would be costly but, in his view, necessary for the program.
Finebaum also praised Oregon coach Dan Lanning for preventing a post-game brawl, saying Lanning kept his team calm under difficult circumstances.
"Thanks to Dan Lanning there wasn’t an absolute massive brawl afterwards. He kept his team cool, which I don’t think was very easy to do," Finebaum said.
Stephen A. Smith echoed the criticism, arguing that the one-game suspension for Stephens was insufficient and that Riley should have taken more immediate action.
"He should have been suspended at least three games. Lincoln Riley’s talking about he didn’t see him celebrating on the sideline. Well, dammit, you should’ve been in his face," Smith said.
The incident has intensified scrutiny of Riley's leadership at USC, with commentators suggesting the program may need significant changes to restore its reputation.
