Elderly In-Laws Arrested in Murder of New York Times Engineer in Dublin, California

Summary

Police detained a married couple in their 70s on suspicion of murdering their son-in-law, a New York Times engineer, after he was found shot dead in a Dublin park.

Police in Dublin, California, arrested a 77-year-old married couple on suspicion of murder after a 40-year-old New York Times engineer was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in a city park. Officers responding to 911 calls found the victim, Jonathan McKinsey, lying on the ground and pronounced him dead at the scene, according to a city press release.

Witnesses reported that the suspects, identified as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, were still present in the area and were wearing masks while each took turns firing at the victim. The pair, described by investigators as McKinsey’s in-laws, were taken into custody shortly after the shooting.

McKinsey had served as head of engineering for the New York Times’s games department for nearly four years. Court records cited by local media indicate that he and his wife were involved in a legal dispute concerning child custody and allegations of domestic and child abuse, though police have not disclosed a motive for the attack. An arraignment is set for Wednesday, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
