Giants acquire J.J. McCarthy from Vikings for 2027 fifth-round pick
New York trades a 2027 fifth-round pick to Minnesota for quarterback J.J. McCarthy, receiving a C-grade assessment, while the Vikings earn a B+ grade for the deal.
The New York Giants have traded a 2027 fifth-round draft selection to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The move follows the Giants' recent two-year, $13 million extension for Jameis Winston and an injury to starter Jaxson Dart, which left Winston to start in Dart's absence.
McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 draft, struggled during his tenure with Minnesota, posting a 36.1 QBR in 2025 and ranking near the bottom of the league in several passing metrics. He lost the Vikings' starting competition to Kyler Murray and subsequently fell behind Carson Wentz on the depth chart.
Analysts graded the trade a C for the Giants, citing limited upside and questioning the decision given other available backup options. The Vikings received a B+ grade, reflecting the acquisition of a future fifth-round pick and modest salary-cap savings.
"The Giants' front office should reflect on the recent extension for Winston and consider whether this trade aligns with their long-term quarterback strategy," one analyst noted.
The trade occurs ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Nov. 10, with both teams positioning themselves for the remainder of the season.
