Trump to discuss AI strategy with Anthropic CEO ahead of White House industry meeting
President Donald Trump said he will meet Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei to discuss maintaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence, as officials and tech leaders raise concerns about regulation and safety.
President Donald Trump announced that he will hold a late-night dinner with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Sunday to talk about artificial intelligence and the United States' competitive position relative to China. Trump said the United States is about a year ahead of China in AI development and emphasized the need to "win" the technology race. He added that a larger White House gathering of AI industry leaders is scheduled for Tuesday.
The meeting comes amid growing calls for AI oversight. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned on television that unchecked AI could contribute to massive loss of life, urging Congress to focus on regulation rather than international competition. Anthropic and other firms, including OpenAI, have also highlighted safety concerns.
Nvidia unveiled a new safety platform designed to set operational limits for autonomous AI agents and to intervene quickly if those limits are breached. The company said more than 100 organizations, such as Microsoft and Salesforce, are collaborating on the technology.
In Congress, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized the potential socioeconomic impact of AI, arguing that the technology could concentrate wealth and reduce employment opportunities while relying on personal data without adequate compensation to creators.
The White House has not detailed specific policy actions, but officials indicated that the upcoming industry meeting will address both innovation and safety considerations.
