Baker Mayfield exits Buccaneers loss with suspected thumb dislocation
Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield left the Week 3 game against the Vikings after injuring his right hand, with coaches planning an MRI to assess the damage.
Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield was forced to leave the final minutes of the Buccaneers' 23-16 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings after sustaining an injury to his throwing hand. Coach Todd Bowles said the injury appeared to be a dislocated thumb and that an MRI would be performed the next day to determine the extent of the damage.
Mayfield's injury occurred on a fourth-and-13 play with the team trailing by four points. While attempting a pass, he was hit and threw an interception to Andrew Van Ginkel, then fell to the ground clutching his right hand before walking off with trainers.
Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels entered the game in Mayfield's place, rushing for nine yards but failing to complete any of his three pass attempts, including a Hail Mary that was intercepted by Isaiah Rodgers.
Mayfield finished with 17 completions on 34 attempts for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The loss marked Tampa Bay's third straight defeat, the franchise's first 0-3 start since 2014, and the sixth such start in the NFL over the past decade where all losses were decided by a single score.
