USC linebacker Desman Stephens suspended one game for targeting hit on Oregon quarterback
USC suspended linebacker Desman Stephens for one game after he was ejected for a late hit on Oregon quarterback Dante Moore, who required medical attention.
USC announced on Sunday that junior linebacker Desman Stephens will miss the upcoming game against Washington after being suspended for one contest. The discipline follows his ejection for a targeting foul during the second quarter of Saturday's game, in which Oregon defeated USC 41-20. Stephens delivered a late hit to quarterback Dante Moore as Moore was scrambling and preparing to slide, striking the player's head. Moore was stretchered off the field and required medical care.
USC head coach Lincoln Riley said, > "Desman's actions in last night's game are unacceptable and are not reflective of USC Football nor of his personal character. He understands his mistake, accepts the consequences of his actions and will learn from this. The entire Trojan Family wishes Dante a full recovery, and we send our best regards to him and his family."
Stephens issued an apology, stating, > "I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during yesterday's game. Seeing a player injured like that is incredibly serious, and my reaction in the moments afterward was completely inappropriate and inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions and hope he makes a full and speedy recovery."
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning described the hit as "disgusting."
