HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to Release Report Linking Prenatal Tylenol Use to Autism

Summary

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is set to release a report suggesting a link between prenatal acetaminophen use and autism, a claim that has been met with skepticism from medical experts and has impacted Kenvue's stock performance.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is preparing to release a report later this month that is expected to suggest a link between the use of Tylenol (acetaminophen) during pregnancy and the development of autism in children. The report may also propose folinic acid (leucovorin) as a potential treatment for autism symptoms.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has cautioned that any claims about the report's contents are speculative until its official release. An HHS spokesperson stated, "We are using gold-standard science to get to the bottom of America's unprecedented rise in autism rates. Until we release the final report, any claims about its contents are nothing more than speculation."

Kenvue, the parent company of Tylenol, responded by emphasizing the safety of acetaminophen. The company stated, "We have continuously evaluated the science and continue to believe there is no causal link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism."

Medical experts have expressed skepticism regarding the anticipated findings. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) maintains that acetaminophen is safe for use during pregnancy when taken as directed and after consulting a healthcare provider. ACOG stated, "There is no clear evidence that proves a direct relationship between the prudent use of acetaminophen during pregnancy and fetal developmental issues."

A 2024 study published in JAMA, involving over 2.5 million Swedish children, found no association between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and diagnoses of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability.

Following reports of the upcoming HHS document, Kenvue's stock experienced a significant decline, dropping over 10% in late-day trading.

The forthcoming report is expected to assert a link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism. However, leading medical organizations continue to endorse the careful, indicated use of acetaminophen during pregnancy, and Kenvue's stock has been under pressure amid the headlines.
