SEC metric boost may allow five conference teams in CFP as Texas rises

Summary

The College Football Playoff committee added a conference-strength metric, giving the SEC a chance to secure five spots in the 12-team bracket, while Texas moves up the rankings after beating Tennessee.

The College Football Playoff selection committee introduced a new metric that evaluates conference strength, giving leagues such as the SEC and Big Ten greater influence in the at-large selection process. The change comes after the SEC posted a record-setting weekend that featured four games between ranked opponents and three losses by previously unbeaten teams.

The metric could clear a path for the SEC to earn five selections in the 12-team playoff, provided the conference maintains its perceived strength. SEC coaches have recently voiced concerns about the league’s shift to a nine-game conference schedule, saying it raises the odds of teams finishing with multiple losses.

Top-ranked Texas defeated No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday, adding to its earlier win over then-No. 1 Ohio State. The Longhorns still face Florida, Mississippi State, Missouri, LSU, Texas A&M and Ole Miss in the coming weeks. LSU coach Lane Kiffin noted, "It starts with Texas playing seven top-25 teams left. Then you have other conferences — and I'm not ripping on any school. I'm just saying these are the facts. You have a Big 12 school that doesn't play one ranked team the rest of the year, and you have an ACC team that plays zero ranked teams the rest of the year."

The updated projections now show the Big 12 as a one-bid league, a fifth SEC team added to the CFP mix, and a new top-four seed emerging from the Big Ten. Various bowl matchups were also revised, reflecting recent results across the FBS.

Other notable updates include Kentucky’s 5.5 win total in head coach Will Stein’s first season, Clemson’s 2-0 ACC start after a punt-return touchdown, and Iowa’s projected runner-up status in the Big Ten despite a narrow win over Northwestern. The projections also outline potential first-round playoff pairings, such as Alabama versus BYU and Oregon versus Florida, while highlighting the importance of upcoming games like the Egg Bowl for SEC positioning.
