Russell Holds Off Verstappen to Win Azerbaijan Grand Prix by 0.196 Seconds
George Russell claimed victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after two safety-car periods and a late-race restart allowed Max Verstappen to close the gap, but the Mercedes driver maintained a narrow lead to the finish.
George Russell secured a win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, finishing 0.196 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen after a chaotic second half of the race. The event, which had run smoothly until lap 30, was disrupted when Alex Albon crashed his Williams, prompting the first safety-car deployment. The pause allowed the field to pit, and Russell, Verstappen and Oscar Piastri all switched to soft tyres, giving the Dutch driver a chance to challenge for the lead.
On the restart, Russell managed a clean getaway and built a small gap, while Verstappen passed Piastri for second place. A second safety-car was triggered on lap 38 after a multi-car incident involving Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, Lando Norris and others. After the restart, Russell again led into the first corner and kept Verstappen at bay despite the Red Bull driver’s stronger pace on the soft compound.
The final lap saw a yellow-flag situation when Valtteri Bottas crashed, briefly reducing Russell’s engine boost. Verstappen used the slipstream to close in, but could not overtake before the finish line. Russell’s victory marked his first win of the season and moved him closer to championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
"It felt like qualifying laps, one after another, and I knew I couldn’t make a single mistake. The last 10 laps were a bit more tense than the first 40," Russell said.
"I think even if I started second, the pace of George would have made it very hard to pass," Verstappen added.
Isack Hadjar completed the podium in third place after Oscar Piastri ran off the road with eleven laps remaining.
