Mississippi police say homicide of woman found hanging was staged, mother expresses shock

Summary

Mississippi authorities say Tasia Fortune died before her body was placed on a tree, describing the scene as staged, while her mother says she still has unanswered questions.

Mississippi police have concluded that the death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, whose body was discovered hanging from a tree at an abandoned house in Jackson, was a homicide that was staged after she died. The Jackson Police Department said the medical examiner determined the hanging was not the cause of death and that the scene had been arranged.

Fortune, a mother of four who was homeless at the time, was found in August, prompting concerns in the majority-Black city about the legacy of racial violence. Three Black suspects have been arrested, though officials have not disclosed how they are linked to the case or the motive for the staging.

"I have more questions now than before," said Christy Spivey, the victim’s mother, to the BBC. She added that she had hoped the new information would bring relief, but the lack of details about the cause and date of death left her unsettled.

Police told a court the death may have stemmed from a drug-related dispute, with a detective suggesting Fortune could have been killed over accusations of stealing drugs. Spivey acknowledged her daughter’s struggle with addiction, saying, "If she still was doing drugs, which I'm sure she probably was, she still didn't deserve to be done like that. Nobody does."

The investigation continues as authorities seek to identify the individuals responsible for the homicide and the staging of the scene.
