U.S. and China agree to create AI incident communication channel after Washington summit

Resumen

The United States and China announced a bilateral channel for handling artificial intelligence incidents and outlined further trade and diplomatic arrangements following a summit in Washington.

The United States and China said they will establish a bilateral communication channel to address incidents involving artificial intelligence, according to statements from both governments after a summit in Washington. Chinese state media also confirmed the agreement.

The leaders, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, discussed a range of topics, including AI, trade, and the conflict in Iran, and agreed to meet again at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 meeting in Miami in December.

In addition to the AI hotline, the United States reported that China will import at least 10 million metric tons of coal in 2027 and 2028, and both sides will grant more favorable tariff treatment for $30 billion of non-sensitive goods. Two Chinese pandas are also scheduled to be transferred to a U.S. zoo.

"We have made great strides, very positive for both countries," Trump told reporters after the meeting.

"Strategic stability should be based on respect, fairness and reciprocity," Xi said.

The summit also included cultural exchanges, such as visits to the National Archives and a tour of the White House, where the leaders viewed historic documents.

During the visit, Trump confirmed that the two leaders discussed the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.

Both governments indicated that the dialogue helped reduce tensions and will continue through scheduled high-level meetings later this year.
