Greenville Police say investigation into Hayden Panettiere death remains open

Summary

South Carolina authorities confirmed that the probe into actress Hayden Panettiere's fatal overdose continues despite the coroner’s ruling of accidental death.

South Carolina police said the investigation into the death of actress Hayden Panettiere is still active, even though the coroner’s office has classified the incident as an accidental overdose. The Greenville Police Department’s public information officer explained that a redacted computer-aided dispatch report lists the 911 call as “closed,” which only indicates that the call itself is no longer active on the department’s system.

The county coroner’s office reported that toxicology tests found fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine in Panettiere’s system, along with naloxone and cotinine. The DEA is assisting local investigators.

According to statements from Panettiere’s boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, the couple arrived in Greenville from Los Angeles the day before her death. Hickerson said he slept in a bedroom while Panettiere rested in the living room, and that she was awake applying makeup the following morning. After a brief breakfast together, Hickerson fell asleep again and was awakened later by his brother Zach, who reported finding Panettiere unresponsive on a sofa bed.

"She was sitting crisscross applesauce, face down and unresponsive, purple in color," the brother said, adding that he attempted to administer nasal Narcan twice without success.

Paramedics arrived shortly after a 911 call placed at 1:50 p.m. and performed advanced cardiac life support for about 30 minutes, but Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m. The investigation remains open, officials said.
