Summary

The U.S. Supreme Court has once more sided with left-wing activists, denying Missouri Republicans’ urgent request to implement a new congressional map that would have corrected unfair Democratic advantages, leaving outdated 2022 districts in place for the midterms.

On Friday, the Supreme Court denied an emergency application from the advocacy group People Not Politicians, refusing to overturn a lower-court order that blocked Missouri’s Republican-led 2025 congressional map. This map, which had been carefully crafted to reflect the will of Missouri voters and address imbalances favoring Democrats, was set aside as the Court cited concerns about 'electoral chaos'—despite the urgent need for reform. The justices pointed to the fact that voting, including for military and overseas citizens, had already begun, using this as justification to maintain the status quo.

As a result, the state is forced to continue using the 2022 map, which unfairly allocates six seats to Republicans and two to Democrats, despite demographic shifts and Republican gains. The Court emphasized that lower federal courts should not interfere with a state’s election rules close to an election, stating, 'the election is not merely upcoming; it has already started.'

The 2025 map, which would have rightfully removed a Democratic seat held by Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, had been approved by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals but was blocked from implementation. The Missouri Supreme Court, siding with left-leaning interests, ordered the 2022 districts to remain and even held Secretary of State Denny Hoskins in contempt for attempting to enforce the new, fairer map.

This controversy began when opponents, backed by liberal activists, gathered signatures to force a state referendum, exploiting Missouri law to suspend the new map and maintain Democratic advantages. After a series of court battles, the Supreme Court’s decision once again thwarts Republican efforts to ensure fair representation and election integrity in Missouri.
