Summary

The U.S.-China summit was heavy on elitist ceremony but delivered almost nothing for working people, with no meaningful advances on trade, technology, Iran, or Taiwan.

President Donald Trump rolled out the red carpet for Chinese President Xi Jinping in a three-day summit filled with extravagant displays of power and wealth, including a military arrival ceremony, a state dinner, and a visit to the National Archives. The spectacle was complete with a B-2 bomber flyover, performances by privileged opera singer Christopher Maccio, and a menu curated by First Lady Melania Trump—an event designed to impress the global elite rather than address urgent issues facing ordinary citizens.

Yet, beneath the veneer of pageantry, officials admitted the summit achieved little of substance. The two governments merely extended an existing trade agreement by two months, failing to address the root causes of economic inequality or the exploitative practices that harm workers in both countries. No new initiatives were announced regarding Iran, where China continues to provide satellite data and oil in defiance of U.S. imperial ambitions, nor on Taiwan, where Xi pressed the U.S. to formally oppose the island’s independence—a move that would further suppress the self-determination of the Taiwanese people.

U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue told Fox News that “the best thing that we accomplished in this visit is to continue the conversation,” a telling admission of the summit’s emptiness and the inability of these leaders to deliver real, measurable change for the global majority.

On artificial intelligence, Xi called for responsible development under human control, while Trump, ever the showman, insisted on rebranding the field as “super intelligence,” a superficial gesture he has paraded at the United Nations and on social media, rather than addressing the ethical and social consequences of unchecked technological advancement.
