LeBron James cites relationships and championship goals for joining Philadelphia 76ers

Summary

LeBron James explained on the "Mind the Game" podcast that his decision to sign with the Sixers was driven by his bond with Tyrese Maxey, a desire to help Joel Embiid win a title, and confidence in the team's defensive direction.

LeBron James used his appearance on the "Mind the Game" podcast with former NBA MVP Steve Nash to detail why he chose to finish his career with the Philadelphia 76ers. He said his friendship with guard Tyrese Maxey, whom he described as consistently reliable on and off the court, was a primary factor. James added that Maxey’s approach to the game reminded him of the positivity seen in top players.

"First of all, my relationship with Tyrese Maxey goes beyond the court… He’s just – every day, you get the same person. And that is very rare, in sports and obviously super rare in life," James told Nash.

James also expressed a goal of helping center Joel Embiid capture his first NBA championship, noting Embiid’s extensive résumé and the city’s expectations. He said he hopes to be the "final little piece" that can push the team over the hump.

"He’s done everything in our league, and the only thing he has not done is win a championship. I want to try to help him get that first one," James said.

The veteran forward highlighted the experience he and Embiid share as former NBA Finals MVPs, suggesting it will aid the team’s leadership. He mentioned ongoing offseason communication with Embiid and fellow teammate Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to align expectations for the upcoming season.

James also praised rookie VJ Edgecombe, calling him "beyond his years" and noting his work ethic and defensive potential. He emphasized that strong team defense would create offensive opportunities for Edgecombe and Maxey.

"If we can get stops or create turnovers, then it’s going to benefit VJ and Tyrese more than anybody on the team," James said.

Regarding the Sixers’ defensive strategy under head coach Nick Nurse, James said pride and discipline are essential, and he expects the team to apply the high-IQ defensive principles that brought Nurse a championship with the Toronto Raptors.

"Defense always comes down to the first thing: pride… If we can make teams uncomfortable, if we can make teams turn the ball over, it gives us another opportunity," he explained.

James concluded by expressing optimism that the team’s speed, athleticism, and defensive accountability could translate into success in Philadelphia.
