Massive Protests in Israel Demand Hostage Release and End to Gaza Conflict
Hundreds of thousands of Israelis protested nationwide, urging the government to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas and to cease military operations in Gaza.
In one of the largest demonstrations since the onset of the Gaza conflict nearly two years ago, hundreds of thousands of Israelis took to the streets across the country, demanding the government secure the release of hostages held by Hamas and end military operations in Gaza.
Protesters gathered in major cities, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, blocking highways and holding rallies near Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence. In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square, demonstrators chanted, "We don't win a war over the bodies of hostages," expressing concern that continued military actions could further endanger the remaining 50 hostages, of whom 20 are believed to be alive.
The protests were organized by groups representing families of the hostages and bereaved families, who called for a nationwide strike. Businesses, universities, and public transportation services participated in the strike, with restaurants and cafes closing in solidarity. Major unions, including those representing lawyers and doctors, also joined the demonstrations.
Former hostage Arbel Yehoud addressed the crowd in Tel Aviv, stating, "The only way to bring them back is through a deal, all at once, without games."
The Israeli government has faced increasing pressure to negotiate a ceasefire and prisoner swap deal with Hamas. However, Prime Minister Netanyahu has maintained that military pressure is necessary to defeat Hamas and secure the hostages' release. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich criticized the protests, calling them "a bad and harmful campaign that plays into Hamas' hands."
The demonstrations reflect growing public frustration over the prolonged conflict, which began after Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel that resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages. Since then, Israeli military operations in Gaza have led to significant Palestinian casualties and a worsening humanitarian crisis.
