Documentary 'Musk' by Alex Gibney Set for U.S. Theatrical Release Oct. 9
Alex Gibney's documentary on Elon Musk will open in U.S. theaters on Oct. 9, with an international rollout planned for early 2027 and subsequent streaming on HBO.
Alex Gibney's new documentary, titled Musk, is scheduled to open in U.S. cinemas on Oct. 9, distributed domestically by Bleecker Street Media. The film, which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival two weeks ago, will later be released internationally in the first quarter of 2027, according to Universal Pictures, and is expected to begin streaming on HBO thereafter.
The three-hour-45-minute feature examines a range of incidents linked to Elon Musk, including Tesla's driver-assistance fatalities, SpaceX activities, his acquisition of Twitter, the promotion of Dogecoin, and aspects of his personal life. Interviews feature former spouse Justine Musk, journalists Kara Swisher and Zoe Schiffer, engineers Martin Eberhard and Geoffrey Hinton, and former MAGA influencer Ashley St. Clair, among others. The trailer also shows an AI-generated representation of Musk delivering public statements, a technique employed after Musk declined a personal interview.
Musk has publicly criticized the documentary, calling it a “hit piece” and a “psy-op.” Despite his objections, the film has received positive reviews from critics. Music for the documentary includes an original song by David Byrne that incorporates Musk's own words.
"Musk" is slated for an international theatrical rollout in early 2027, with streaming on HBO to follow, according to Deadline Hollywood.
