Prince Charles Allegedly Told Diana He Was Not in Love Before 1981 Wedding, Claims Diana's Brother
In his memoir, Charles Spencer alleges that Prince Charles told Princess Diana he was not in love with her before their 1981 wedding and recounts other contentious remarks, prompting a brief response from Buckingham Palace.
Prince Charles is said to have told Princess Diana, a day before their 1981 wedding, that he was "very happy to marry her, but he was not actually in love with her," according to a claim made by Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, in his memoir Swan Song: Diana, My Sister. Spencer said he learned of the comment from a friend of Diana's.
Spencer also recounts other alleged remarks by the then-Prince Charles, including a comment about Diana's waist and a complaint about her music, describing the prince as "cruel" and noting that he allegedly shouted, "Get her to turn off that infernal racket!" when Diana played disco music.
The memoir further claims that Charles appeared "giddily elated" at Diana's death and that the two brothers disagreed over funeral arrangements, with Charles reportedly saying Diana would soon be forgotten. Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying it does not comment on books, adding that grief can affect memory and judgment.
"While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss," the palace said.
The allegations have not been independently verified and come amid ongoing public interest in the royal family's private dynamics.
