Republican senators push additional war powers votes as Iran conflict persists

Résumé

Senators are introducing a second war powers resolution to pressure the administration over the ongoing Iran war, while GOP candidates cite rising gas prices in their campaigns.

Senate Republicans have introduced a second war powers resolution aimed at increasing congressional pressure on the administration regarding the conflict in Iran, more than 200 days after hostilities began. The measure follows an earlier resolution that passed both chambers in June but lacked legal force because the 1973 War Powers Act does not require a presidential signature.

Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat, said the additional vote is intended to build momentum, noting that public opposition to the war is growing and hoping the president will eventually comply with congressional expectations.

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski indicated that funding debates during the November-December lame-duck session could become a focal point for opponents of the war, suggesting discussions on reconciliation and supplemental appropriations.

The issue is influencing campaign rhetoric. A recent Fox News poll found that 61% of respondents consider high gas prices a major problem. In response, Republican Representative Ashley Hinson of Iowa, who is running for the Senate, posted on social media that Iowans are “being squeezed” by the war’s costs and called for measures to lower prices, while she has consistently voted against the Iran war powers resolution in the House.

Lawmakers such as Senator Bill Cassidy noted that briefings from the administration have become more regular after he raised concerns, indicating ongoing dialogue between Congress and the executive branch.
