Mother of ICE shooting victim says she voted for Trump, expected protection from agents

Summary

Donna Ganger, mother of Renee Good who was killed by an ICE officer, said she voted for President Trump believing immigration agents would protect citizens, and expressed disappointment after the shooting.

Donna Ganger, mother of Renee Good who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in January, told a public forum on Sept. 22 that she had voted for President Donald Trump because she believed federal immigration officers would protect Americans. The forum was hosted by Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Rep. Robert Garcia of California.

Ganger, who identified as a registered Republican, said the incident left her family feeling unable to protect their loved one. > "I voted for President Trump under the impression that these agents were here to protect the citizens of the United States, innocents like our family and the others here, against terrorists, certainly not to accuse those of us here of being terrorists and take precious lives," she said.

Good, 37, was shot on Jan. 7 in Minneapolis after she moved her car forward near ICE agent Jonathan Ross. Video released later showed her turning the vehicle away before the officer fired. The shooting prompted protests nationwide and renewed scrutiny of the Department of Homeland Security's enforcement tactics.

Family members have described the loss as causing deep distress and a desire for change. The incident, along with a later fatal shooting involving Customs and Border Protection agents, has intensified debate over immigration enforcement policies.
