Giants explore quarterback trade options after Dart injury
Following Jaxson Dart's season-ending knee injury, the New York Giants are considering several quarterback trade targets, including Tyler Huntley and Justin Fields, as they evaluate Jameis Winston's performance.
The New York Giants are evaluating trade options at quarterback after rookie Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury in the second week of the season, ending his campaign. The team has placed Jameis Winston, who recently signed a two-year, $13 million extension, in the starting role, but officials said they will monitor his play and may look for alternatives if needed.
Analysts have identified five quarterbacks who could be viable trade candidates. Former Ravens backup Tyler Huntley, who spent four seasons under head coach John Harbaugh and has familiarity with offensive coordinator Greg Roman, is viewed as a logical fit because of his mobility and prior experience with the coaching staff. The Baltimore Ravens might consider a deal if the price is right, despite Lamar Jackson's injury history.
Chiefs quarterback Justin Fields is another possibility. He was acquired by Kansas City as insurance for Patrick Mahomes and could be expendable now that Mahomes is healthy. Fields previously worked with Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy during his rookie season with the Chicago Bears.
Former first-overall pick Mitchell Trubisky, currently with the Tennessee Titans, is noted for his prior relationship with Nagy, who coached him in Chicago. A trade could be delayed until after the Giants' upcoming game against the Titans.
Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, who requested a trade earlier this year, might be moved for a return value before his contract expires at the end of the 2026 season.
Former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco, now with the Cincinnati Bengals, is also mentioned as a short-term solution. He would reunite with Harbaugh, his former head coach, and could provide veteran experience for the remainder of the season, though the Bengals may retain him unless offered a compelling deal.
Other names such as J.J. McCarthy and Mac Jones have been noted, but the primary focus remains on mobile quarterbacks or those with existing ties to the Giants' coaching staff. The organization has not confirmed any trade discussions.
