Lisbon Funicular Crash Claims 16 Lives; Investigation Underway
A funicular derailment in Lisbon resulted in 16 fatalities and 21 injuries; authorities are investigating the cause, with initial reports pointing to a snapped cable.
A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday when Lisbon's historic Elevador da Glória funicular derailed, resulting in 16 fatalities and 21 injuries. The incident took place near Avenida da Liberdade, where the funicular swerved off its tracks and collided with a building.
Preliminary investigations by Portugal's Office for Air and Rail Accident Investigations (GPIAAF) suggest that the connecting cable between the two cabins snapped shortly after departure, causing the upper cabin to accelerate uncontrollably downhill. Despite the brakeman's efforts, the cabin continued to gain speed before the crash. The funicular had undergone a visual inspection hours before the accident, which detected no anomalies in the cable or braking systems.
The Elevador da Glória, operational since 1914, is a popular tourist attraction connecting downtown Lisbon to the Bairro Alto district. In response to the accident, all funicular lines in the city have been temporarily suspended for safety inspections.
Authorities have launched two separate investigations: one by the GPIAAF and another by the prosecutors' office. A preliminary report is expected within 45 days, with a final report to follow, detailing the causes of the accident and any safety recommendations.
The victims include nationals from several countries, highlighting the international impact of the tragedy. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister Luis Montenegro have expressed their condolences and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to prevent future incidents.
