Israel Destroys High-Rise in Gaza City Amid Intensified Military Offensive
The Israeli military has demolished a high-rise building in Gaza City, escalating its offensive and urging residents to evacuate southward.
The Israeli military has intensified its operations in Gaza City by demolishing a high-rise building, marking the second such action in as many days. The targeted structure, known as the Mushtaha Tower, was located in the al-Rimal neighborhood. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the building was utilized by Hamas for surveillance and planning attacks against Israeli forces. Prior to the strike, the IDF issued evacuation warnings to minimize civilian casualties.
Hamas has denied the IDF's claims, asserting that the building was solely used for civilian purposes. The destruction of the Mushtaha Tower has raised concerns among residents, many of whom had sought shelter in and around the building due to ongoing hostilities.
In conjunction with the airstrikes, the Israeli military has been urging Palestinian civilians to evacuate Gaza City and move southward. Leaflets were dropped, and messages were broadcast, advising residents to relocate to designated humanitarian zones. However, the United Nations has reported that these areas are overcrowded and lack adequate resources, making relocation challenging for many.
The escalation follows the breakdown of indirect talks between Israel and Hamas regarding a ceasefire and hostage release. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced intentions to seize control of the entire Gaza Strip, viewing Gaza City as a significant Hamas stronghold.
The ongoing conflict, which began in October 2023, has resulted in significant casualties. According to Gaza's health ministry, over 64,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with reports of famine and widespread displacement among the civilian population.
