Coroner rules Hayden Panettiere's death an accidental overdose involving fentanyl and other drugs

Summary

The Greenville County Coroner's Office determined that actress Hayden Panettiere died from a toxic combination of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine, classifying the incident as an accident.

The Greenville County Coroner's Office said the 36-year-old actress died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, 4-ANPP, a precursor used in illicit fentanyl production, alprazolam (Xanax), methocarbamol and quetiapine. The official report noted no signs of trauma and ruled the manner of death an accident.

Panettiere was found unconscious in a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, after a 911 call reported a cardiac arrest at about 1:51 p.m. on Aug. 16. First responders attempted life-support measures, but she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

"The preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances," a Greenville Police Department spokesperson told Variety.

Police confirmed that an acquaintance placed the emergency call and that no foul play was suspected. Panettiere, known for roles in series such as "Heroes" and "Nashville" and films including "Scream 4" and "Scream VI," had previously spoken publicly about her struggles with alcohol and drug use. She had stepped away from acting in 2016, returned in 2023, and released a memoir earlier this year detailing her personal challenges.
