Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman sustains multiple facial fractures after foul ball
Alex Bregman posted Instagram photos showing injuries from a foul ball that caused multiple facial fractures, and his availability for the postseason remains uncertain.
Alex Bregman, the Chicago Cubs' third baseman, was struck in the face by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle during Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Reds. He posted images of his injuries to Instagram later that evening and the following morning. ESPN reporter Jeff Passan later confirmed that Bregman suffered multiple facial fractures but expressed optimism that he could return for the postseason. The Cubs, tied for the National League wild-card lead, could feel the impact of his absence as the regular season concludes and the playoffs approach. Bregman, who has posted a 1.006 OPS with 18 doubles and 19 home runs in his last 61 games, is also a key defensive player and a notable postseason hitter. The team faces the Miami Marlins in its next series, with the wild-card round scheduled to begin next week.
"He suffered multiple facial fractures but is hopeful to return during the postseason," reported ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
