Bill Simmons Criticizes Taylor Swift's On-Field Celebration During Chiefs Victory
Podcaster Bill Simmons questioned whether Taylor Swift's celebratory reaction to Travis Kelce's touchdown was appropriate, suggesting it might test the limits of fan tolerance.
Travis Kelce recorded a 101-yard performance, including a touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes, as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Indianapolis Colts in overtime. During the NBC broadcast, Kelce's new wife, Taylor Swift, was shown in the press box pointing to her wedding ring and expressing pride in the play.
Ringer podcaster Bill Simmons commented on the footage, saying the network’s decision to replay Swift’s reaction highlighted a potential double standard for celebrity behavior at sporting events. He remarked, "Kelce scores a touchdown, and they cut to the Taylor Swift replay, and she's pointing to a ring and going, 'That's my husband.'" Simmons added that he wondered whether a different celebrity, such as Madison Beer, would face criticism for a similar display while watching another player.
Simmons noted that Swift and Kelce are married and that Kelce is a three-time Super Bowl champion, distinguishing the situation from other athletes. He also acknowledged Swift’s own achievements in the music industry. The Chiefs' win marked the first occasion in which a quarterback threw for more than 300 yards while a 35-year-old tight end rushed for over 100 yards in the same game.
