Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman hospitalized after foul ball injury
Alex Bregman was taken to a hospital for imaging after a foul ball struck his face during a game against the Cincinnati Reds. The extent of his injuries and his availability for upcoming games remain uncertain.
Chicago third baseman Alex Bregman was escorted to the clubhouse after a foul ball hit his left cheekbone and caused bleeding and swelling. He underwent X-rays and a CT scan at a hospital following the incident in the fourth inning of Sunday’s 9-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Bregman was hit under the eye and noted the injury was serious, adding that the team was awaiting medical reports before deciding whether he would travel back to Chicago. Bregman posted an Instagram story showing a bruised, swollen eye and cheek, thanking fans for messages and stating he would return.
The ball was fouled off by left-handed batter Michael Busch after a pitch from Reds right-hander Luis Mey. After Bregman left the field, Matt Shaw entered as a substitute and drew a walk, while the Cubs reshuffled their infield positions.
Busch commented that hard-hit balls near the head are always frightening, and teammate Pete Crow-Armstrong expressed concern for Bregman's health. The Cubs’ postseason prospects were not immediately affected, as a later game between the Diamondbacks and Yankees determined the final standings.
