iFixit Details Battery Capacity and Design Changes in iPhone 18 Pro Teardown

Summary

iFixit’s teardown of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max reveals modest battery growth, a variable aperture system, larger cooling chamber, and a new issue with the screen frame.

iFixit released a detailed teardown of Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, accompanied by an article and video that examine the devices’ internal components. The analysis confirms that the eSIM-only models sold in the United States and several other markets have slightly larger batteries than the previous generation: the iPhone 18 Pro houses a 4,288 mAh unit, a 0.8% increase over the iPhone 17 Pro, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max contains a 5,567 mAh battery, up 9.4% from its predecessor.

The company notes that models with a physical SIM tray, available outside the listed regions, have already had their battery capacities disclosed. The teardown also highlights a new variable aperture mechanism on both phones, an expanded vapor-chamber cooling system, and the relocation of NAND storage to a dual-layer logic board, which could make storage repairs more difficult.

During the disassembly, iFixit observed that the plastic frame surrounding the display fractured or detached on three of the four iPhone 18 Pro units examined, a problem not seen in earlier models. The firm cautioned that additional testing is required to determine whether this is a widespread issue.
