Charles Spencer Says Harry and Meghan Face Media Treatment Similar to Princess Diana
In an interview, Princess Diana’s brother Charles Spencer compared the public scrutiny of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the criticism his sister endured, calling recent attacks "cancerous" and citing his upcoming memoir.
Charles Spencer, the late Princess Diana’s brother, told the BBC that the media coverage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shows "echoes" of the criticism his sister faced before her death. Referring to his forthcoming memoir, Spencer said tabloid articles about Diana and the Sussex couple can be "really, really unpleasant" and warned that such treatment is a "cancerous influence" on those targeted.
The 62-year-old Earl noted that Diana was "very, very sensitive to criticism" and rejected the view that she lived a flawless, privileged life, recalling how the spotlight brought her "really low." He expressed regret that similar patterns appear today.
Spencer clarified he is not speaking on behalf of Harry and Markle but highlighted the personal impact of relentless negative coverage. He also alleged that King Charles III made disparaging remarks after Diana’s fatal car crash, a claim the monarch has denied, stating that grief can distort memory.
The interview coincides with the release of Spencer’s memoir, "Swan Song: Diana, My Sister," which is expected to provide further details about the royal family’s history and relationships.
