Ed Sheeran Addresses Gaza Conflict and Macklemore Removal During Philadelphia Concert

At a Philadelphia show, Ed Sheeran condemned the violence in Gaza, expressed concern over venue censorship, and responded to criticism surrounding rapper Macklemore's removal from his tour.

Ed Sheeran used his opening remarks at a Philadelphia concert on Saturday to denounce the ongoing violence in Gaza, describing it as "catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate," and to comment on the controversy over rapper Macklemore being dropped from his tour. Sheeran said he does not consider himself an activist musician but felt compelled to speak because the situation had placed him at the center of a debate about freedom of speech and venue control.

"I am deeply worried about the idea that venues should pre-approve content of performers," Sheeran said, adding that such practices should not occur in a free society.

The dispute began after Macklemore, who has incorporated footage of Israeli attacks on Gaza into his performances, was removed from the tour. Macklemore alleged that Sheeran faced pressure from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and that the decision was linked to a threat to cancel the show. Sheeran later attributed the removal to the tour promoter, Messina Touring Group, while Kraft confirmed involvement but did not comment on Macklemore’s claim that he had urged other venue owners to follow suit.

Following his removal, Macklemore pledged to donate $1 million of his tour earnings to six Palestinian-aid organizations and challenged Kraft to match the contribution. Kraft subsequently announced a $2 million donation for regional aid, though the specific charities were not disclosed.

Sheeran also noted that several members of his backing band resigned in solidarity with Macklemore, and he introduced new musicians for the remainder of the performance. He emphasized his commitment to keeping concerts a “safe space for everyone” and thanked the audience for their support despite the surrounding controversy.

"Everyone’s telling me to cancel and I’m feeling all of my friends and family and people I know abandon me, and I look at the end of the week and I see 50,000 people who haven’t abandoned me," Sheeran said, highlighting the mixed reactions he has received.

The singer concluded by reaffirming his focus on music that promotes unity and humanity, while acknowledging the need to learn more about the humanitarian crisis in the region.
