UNICEF Reports Severe Child Malnutrition Amid Gaza City Crisis

Summary

UNICEF warns of escalating child malnutrition and collapsing essential services in Gaza City as military operations intensify.

UNICEF has raised alarms over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza City, highlighting severe child malnutrition and the collapse of essential services amid ongoing military operations. Tess Ingram, UNICEF's Communication Manager for the Middle East and North Africa, described the city as "a place where childhood cannot survive."

Nearly one million residents remain in Gaza City, facing famine conditions and limited aid access. Only 44 out of 92 UNICEF-supported outpatient nutrition treatment centers are operational, leaving thousands of malnourished children without critical support. Hospitals are overwhelmed, with only 11 partially functioning and five equipped with neonatal intensive care units. These units are operating at double capacity, with 40 incubators accommodating up to 80 infants, all reliant on generators and dwindling medical supplies.

Ingram recounted meeting displaced families, children separated from parents, and mothers mourning children lost to starvation. She emphasized that the crisis is already unfolding, stating, "The unthinkable is not looming. It is already here."

UNICEF continues to provide aid, delivering ready-to-use therapeutic food sufficient for over 3,000 acutely malnourished children in the past two weeks. However, the agency stresses the need for immediate and increased access to food and nutrition treatments to prevent further child starvation.

The organization calls on Israel to review its rules of engagement to protect children, urges Hamas and other armed groups to release all remaining hostages, and appeals to the international community to leverage influence to end the conflict. Ingram warned that inaction would result in more children "buried in rubble, wasted by hunger, and silenced before they ever had a chance to speak."
