Summary

Sen. John Barrasso argued that President Trump’s decision to bar three news outlets from the White House does not violate the First Amendment and will not affect upcoming elections.

Sen. John Barrasso, Republican of Wyoming, told NBC News’ "Meet the Press" that he does not believe President Donald Trump’s ban on Politico, MS NOW and CNN reporters constitutes a constitutional violation. Barrasso said the press has an obligation to report fairly and that the president’s action would not influence the 2024 midterm elections, adding that voters will decide based on personal concerns.

Trump announced the ban on Friday via a post on his social-media platform, claiming it was a response to what he described as “constant reporting fake news.” He warned that other outlets could face similar restrictions.

The three news organizations said they were turned away at the White House security kiosk on Saturday and that their credentials were revoked. Representatives for Politico, CNN and MS NOW said they will continue covering the White House and will defend their First Amendment rights.

The White House Correspondents’ Association condemned the move, stating that press freedom is protected regardless of a president’s approval of coverage. Democratic Senator Cory Booker, who appeared after Barrasso, said the ban clearly violates the First Amendment.
