Gable Steveson knocked out in 12 seconds at UFC 331, ending unbeaten streak
Olympic champion Gable Steveson suffered his first professional loss when Sean Sharaf knocked him out 12 seconds into their heavyweight bout at UFC 331, surprising bettors and observers.
Olympic gold-medalist Gable Steveson was defeated by Sean Sharaf in a heavyweight bout at UFC 331 on Saturday night in Los Angeles. The knockout occurred 12 seconds after the opening bell, when Sharaf landed a left hand that sent Steveson to the canvas.
Steveson entered the fight as a heavy favorite, listed at -1800 by some sportsbooks, and had a 4-0 record with all wins coming by first-round knockout. Sharaf, who had not recorded a win in his previous two UFC appearances and was considered a long-shot, secured the upset.
Former two-division champion Jon Jones, who has been mentoring Steveson, was present in the corner alongside coaches Greg Jackson and Brandon Gibson. Cameras captured Jones’ reaction as he watched the knockout, appearing surprised by the outcome.
Steveson, 26, transitioned to mixed-martial arts in 2025 after a decorated wrestling career that included a 2020 Olympic gold medal, two NCAA Division I titles and two Dan Hodge Trophies. He made his UFC debut in July with a two-minute stoppage of Elisha Ellison.
Sharaf, a retired U.S. Marine, entered the bout as an underdog with odds exceeding 10-to-1 at several sportsbooks. The result marked the biggest betting upset in UFC history according to DraftKings data.
