President Donald Trump said he will establish an “AI Force” and appoint an AI czar, while rejecting calls for tighter regulation of artificial intelligence.
President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform that he intends to create an "AI Force" and later name an "AI czar," echoing his earlier establishment of the Space Force. He described concerns about artificial intelligence as a hoax but said the new unit would use existing criminal and civil justice mechanisms to address any wrongdoing.
"We will not in any way hinder or stifle the growth of this incredible industry," Trump wrote, adding that the United States is leading China and the world in AI development.
The proposal arrives as lawmakers and industry leaders have urged the government to implement safeguards for rapidly advancing AI technologies. Former President Barack Obama recently called for Democratic candidates to prioritize AI regulation, emphasizing the need for government oversight.
The White House has not yet detailed the responsibilities of the AI czar or whether the AI Force will become a separate military branch. Sources said a high-level AI meeting is planned on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, and AI executives are expected to attend a state dinner during Chinese leader Xi Jinping's visit.
The announcement follows previous attempts by the administration to coordinate AI policy, including the appointment of venture capitalist David Sacks as an AI and cryptocurrency czar earlier this year.
