Brian Belichick named UNC defensive coordinator after brother's resignation
Brian Belichick has been appointed defensive coordinator for the University of North Carolina football team, succeeding his brother Steve who stepped down following medical leave.
Brian Belichick has been promoted to defensive coordinator for the University of North Carolina football program, taking over the role from his older brother Steve Belichick, who resigned after a period of medical leave. Both brothers previously served on their father Bill Belichick's New England Patriots staff from 2017 to 2023, with Brian primarily coaching safeties and Steve focusing on outside linebackers.
Brian had already been handling defensive back coaching duties at UNC and assumed play-calling responsibilities while Steve was on leave. The move comes after UNC’s general manager Michael Lombardi also departed in early September following an internal investigation that the university said uncovered isolated actions contrary to its values, but not a systemic issue.
The Tar Heels, who opened the season with two wins, will begin ACC competition with an away game at Clemson. Bill Belichick remains head coach of the team, which posted a 4-8 record in his first season last year.
