iPhone 18 Pro Max edges out Galaxy S26 Ultra in head-to-head test

Summary

In a seven-category comparison, Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max scored higher than Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra in most areas, including performance, battery life and camera low-light quality, while the Samsung device led in display privacy and AI software features.

Apple and Samsung’s latest flagships, the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the Galaxy S26 Ultra, were evaluated across seven categories to determine which offers the better overall experience. Both devices launch at the same entry-level price of $1,299 for their base storage models.

In design, the iPhone’s contoured aluminum frame and heavier feel were noted as more premium, whereas the Galaxy’s lighter build accommodates an integrated S Pen, a feature absent from the iPhone.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra introduced a native Privacy Display that limits viewing angles, a hardware innovation highlighted by the reviewer. The iPhone 18 Pro Max, however, achieved a peak brightness of 2,396 nits on its 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR panel, outperforming the Samsung screen in bright-light conditions.

Camera testing showed the iPhone’s 48 MP main sensor with a mechanical variable aperture delivering sharper low-light images and more natural colour reproduction. Samsung’s 200 MP sensor offered higher optical zoom reach, but struggled with edge clarity in dim environments.

Performance benchmarks favoured the iPhone’s A20 Pro chip, which posted higher single- and multi-core Geekbench scores and superior 3DMark graphics results. Samsung’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 led in AI-specific workloads, scoring higher on the Geekbench AI test.

Battery endurance tests recorded about 18.5 hours of use for the iPhone versus roughly 16.7 hours for the Galaxy, and the iPhone reached 80 % charge in 30 minutes, slightly faster than the Samsung’s 77 %.

Software comparisons noted iOS 27’s new Siri AI and generative tools, while Samsung’s One UI 9 with Gemini Live and DeX provided broader multitasking and automation capabilities.

Overall, the reviewer concluded that the iPhone 18 Pro Max won more categories, particularly in performance, battery life and low-light photography, whereas the Galaxy S26 Ultra excelled in display privacy and AI-driven software features.
