Falcons name Cooper Rush starter for Week 2 as Penix out and Tagovailoa doubtful

Summary

Atlanta announced Cooper Rush will start against the Panthers, while Michael Penix Jr. remains out after knee surgery and Tua Tagovailoa is listed as doubtful with an oblique injury.

Atlanta announced that quarterback Cooper Rush will start Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, with rookie Jack Strand serving as his backup. The team also listed Michael Penix Jr. as out for the week after undergoing reconstructive knee surgery last season, and veteran Tua Tagovailoa as doubtful due to an oblique strain sustained in practice.

Coach Kevin Stefanski said Rush, who has been managing a back issue, is "doing better" but declined to project beyond the upcoming game. Penix participated fully in practice this week, yet Stefanski did not confirm his availability for the following week’s matchup in Green Bay. "Again, it’s a progression," Stefanski added, expressing confidence in the medical and coaching staff’s plan and noting that Penix will return when ready.

The Falcons also reported cornerback Billy Bowman Jr. out with an Achilles injury, while guard Chris Lindstrom (concussion) and cornerback A.J. Terrell (shoulder) are listed as questionable. Lindstrom took part in Friday’s practice, whereas Terrell did not.
