Diesel Prices Near Record Levels as Geopolitical Tensions Pressurize Markets

Resumen

Diesel averaged $6.43 per gallon, while gasoline was $4.47, as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Ukraine conflict keep oil prices above $100 a barrel.

Diesel prices in the United States remained close to a record $6.43 per gallon on Friday, according to data from GasBuddy. The increase coincides with ongoing supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz following a U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran and continued effects of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has seen more Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil facilities.

Gasoline prices averaged $4.47 per gallon, up $1.53 since the conflict with Iran began. Analysts note that higher fuel costs could raise transportation expenses for wholesalers, potentially leading to modest price increases for a range of consumer goods.

Oil benchmarks stayed above $100 a barrel, with Brent crude around $103 and WTI near $102, both slipping slightly on the day. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since 2023, aiming to curb inflation, which stood at 3.4% in August.

"We cannot affect any individual price, whether it be oil prices, whether it be food stuffs at the grocery store. But what we can do, and will do, is ensure that any change in relative prices don't broaden out," Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh told reporters.

A report from the National Energy Assistance Directors Association warned that households relying on heating oil could see winter bills rise more than 31% compared with last year, while overall heating costs are projected to increase by about 8.7% this season.
