Josh Allen throws for three touchdowns and rushes for two as Bills beat Lions 41-31 in Highmark Stadium debut

Summary

Quarterback Josh Allen accounted for five touchdowns in Buffalo's 41-31 victory over Detroit, the first game played at the new Highmark Stadium.

Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen led the Bills to a 41-31 win over the Detroit Lions in the inaugural game at Highmark Stadium, contributing five touchdowns—three through the air and two on the ground. Allen completed 20 of 31 passes for 248 yards and added 69 rushing yards on 14 carries. The Bills built a 21-0 lead by halftime and finished with 446 total yards and 34 first downs, while Detroit managed 137 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Allen said he felt emotional before kickoff as the U.S. and Canadian national anthems played, adding that playing quarterback for an NFL franchise was “everything I ever wanted.” Bills coach Joe Brady praised Allen, noting that “anytime the ball’s in his hands, good things happen.”

Detroit attempted a high blitz rate, targeting Allen on more than half of his dropbacks, but the quarterback still completed 12 of 17 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions' quarterback threw for 137 yards and two scores, also scrambling for a touchdown.

Buffalo’s offense was balanced, with running back James Cook gaining 135 rushing yards and a touchdown, and the passing attack delivering 248 yards. The team converted 9 of 12 third-down attempts and was sacked only twice.

Wide receiver Josh Palmer, when asked about the offense’s strengths, said the team has “dangerous” players at every position, including the running back, tight end, wide receiver groups, the quarterback, and the offensive line.
