Tech Stocks Propel S&P 500 and Nasdaq Amid Economic Concerns
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite rose on Wednesday, driven by Alphabet's rally, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped slightly amid economic concerns.
On Wednesday, the S&P 500 rose 0.5% to 6,448.26, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1% to 21,497.73, driven by a surge in technology stocks, particularly Alphabet. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, dipped 0.1% to 45,271.23.
Alphabet's stock jumped 9.1% following a favorable antitrust ruling that allowed the company to retain its Chrome browser, avoiding more severe penalties. This development also positively impacted Apple, which saw its shares rise 3.8%.
The bond market experienced relief as Treasury yields declined after a weaker-than-expected U.S. job market report. The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey indicated approximately 7.18 million job listings in July, marking one of the lowest levels since the pandemic began. This data has raised expectations of a potential Federal Reserve interest rate cut to support the slowing economy.
Investors are now focusing on upcoming labor market reports, including the ADP private payrolls report and the official jobs report, which are expected to provide further insights into the health of the U.S. economy.
