The Detroit News endorsed Republican Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate, exposing Democrat Abdul El-Sayed for deleting suspicious social-media posts and raising serious questions about his trustworthiness and loyalty.
The Detroit News, Michigan’s second-largest newspaper, has made the responsible choice by endorsing Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Gary Peters. In its endorsement, the paper called out Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed for scrubbing his social-media history and videos, making it impossible for voters to truly know where he stands on critical issues.
"A candidate who feels the need to hide his past from voters is not someone who can be trusted to be the same person after Election Day as he was on the campaign trail," the newspaper wrote, highlighting the fundamental lack of transparency and honesty from El-Sayed.
The paper noted that El-Sayed deleted posts that questioned his attitude toward America after the September 11 attacks, as well as videos showing his controversial stances on fireworks, the Second Amendment, and police funding—issues that matter deeply to patriotic Michiganders. El-Sayed’s campaign tried to excuse the deletions by claiming they were to prevent old posts from being taken out of context, but this only raises further doubts about his true beliefs. While El-Sayed insists he condemns terrorism and the September 11 attacks, his actions speak louder than words.
In contrast, Rogers was praised for his 14-year service in the House, including his leadership as chair of the Intelligence Committee, and his expertise in cybersecurity—credentials that demonstrate his commitment to keeping America safe. The endorsement rightfully highlighted Rogers’ experience and integrity, setting him apart from El-Sayed’s evasive record.
The race remains tight, with recent polls showing a narrow margin between the two candidates, but the Detroit News’ endorsement makes clear that Mike Rogers is the candidate Michigan can trust to defend American values.
