Sony Pictures announced that "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" became the highest-grossing film ever in the United States, overtaking "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," with domestic earnings of $936.77 million.

Sony Pictures Entertainment said its latest Marvel-based film, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," has become the top-grossing movie in U.S. box-office history, earning $936.77 million and surpassing "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." The studio’s Motion Picture Group chairman, Tom Rothman, circulated an internal memo congratulating staff on the achievement and noting that the film also ranks as the third-highest-grossing worldwide. Rothman thanked key contributors, including the film’s director Destin Daniel Cretton, lead actor Tom Holland, and the production teams in Tokyo and elsewhere. He encouraged employees to recognize the milestone amid the industry's challenges. Sony also previewed an upcoming release, Zach Cregger’s "Resident Evil" reboot, which it expects to open with $40-50 million domestically and about $80 million globally.

"The movie business will knock you around. So please take a beat today and savor the feeling. Number one of all time. Pretty darn cool," Rothman wrote in the memo.
