Spider-Man: Brand New Day Sets New Domestic Box-Office Record

Summary

The latest Spider-Man film has surpassed "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" to become the highest-grossing movie ever in the United States, according to Box Office Mojo data.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has overtaken the domestic box-office record previously held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned $936,662,225 in 2015. The new film reached the milestone in 47 days, surpassing the earlier record by a narrow margin. Box office tracking firm Box Office Mojo reported the achievement after the movie accumulated more than $937 million in U.S. ticket sales.

The film opened with a domestic debut of nearly $400 million, exceeding the opening record set by Avengers: Endgame, and quickly crossed the $1 billion threshold. Analysts note that inflation and higher ticket prices for premium formats contribute to the higher gross compared with earlier releases.

"We are thrilled to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day achieve this historic milestone," a Sony spokesperson said.

Lucasfilm, the studio behind Star Wars, issued a statement congratulating the new record holder.
